A 200 foot scale model of Manhattan with integrated video mapping, touch screens, and sound installations.

Windows Microtropolis was a public exhibition and launch event for Windows 8, featuring a large-scale, interactive model of Manhattan at Pier 57 in New York City. It was designed to showcase the capabilities of Windows 8 and the Microsoft Surface tablets. The event was a major spectacle, attracting thousands of visitors and receiving considerable media attention.

  • Interactive Experience:
    Visitors could explore the model, with hundreds of Surface tablets embedded in the buildings, offering interactive experiences and information about the city and Windows 8. 

    Scale Model:
    The event featured a 1/4 acre model of Manhattan, with buildings reaching up to 15 feet high and avenues wide enough for walking, as described in a Fast Company video

    Launch Event:
    Microtropolis served as the launchpad for Windows 8, showcasing the new operating system's features and capabilities in a unique and engaging way. 

    Curated Content:
    The Surface tablets were loaded with curated content, including information about the city, local businesses, and interactive games.

    Cultural Integration:
    The event aimed to connect with New York's creative community, incorporating cultural elements like block parties, concerts, and movie screenings.
